Department of Homeland Security Checking Out Progressive Clothing Sites

Questions and Answers

How do you know it's not just liberals who work there browsing?

We're not sure how many liberals would be working for the Department of Homeland Security, but yes, it could indeed just be progressive workers browsing - part of the reason we put this page up was so that other progressive sites might check their logs we could see if there was a continued pattern.

Our concern about this has to be taken in the context of what else the DOJ and DHS are up to these days. When government bodies are spying on anti-war protestors and blocking them from boarding flights, and people who make negative comments about Bush get visits from the FBI, searches from their computers on "progressive clothing" tends to raise questions.

Just a handful articles on these topics:

John Ashcroft's Subpoena Blitz - Targeting Lawyers, Universities, Peaceful Demonstrators, Hospitals, and Patients, All With No Connection to Terrorism
The No Fly List - Is a federal agency systematically harassing travelers for their political beliefs?
The FBI's House Calls - criticize Bush at your gym, get a visit from the FBI.
The Poster Police - student gets Secret Service visit for having political poster on wall

Isn't it hypocritical to complain about them invading your privacy when you are posting your log files?

This was raised on a web board which posted our link. However, we have never said that anyone was invading our privacy! This is a publicly viewable web site, and anyone can visit it for any reason. We don't object to the DOJ or DHS visiting us - if anyone there wants to wear our Ashcroft Fascist button to work we'd be thrilled. ;-) But given the general behavior of those bodies in the last couple of years, we think anyone there searching the web for progressive clothing is something worth mentioning. Whether you find it spooky or a non-issue is up to you to judge.

How often have they visited you, and what other government bodies have visited?

Our server only gives us the access logs for the previous 24 hours, and we haven't checked them regularly until now. As we lead busy lives we are not able to check them every day. So we have no idea whether they visited before the dates listed in the logs posted.

Since then we've had a couple of brief visits from the DHS, and visits from a number of other interesting .gov computers including the FAA and DoD Network Information Center. We've also had visits from a number of military sites, the House of Representatives, Library of Congress, EPA, and the USDA. But we don't feel paranoid about most of those! ;-)
